Handicrafts: Pullas (Footwears made out of hemp fibers)

Pullas serve a footwear made out of hemp (fiber extracted from Marijuana stem). Colorful designs are made on the upper portion with threads. Pullas are used in kitchens and places of worship, where leather shoes are not permissible.

Pullas originally belong to Banjar Valley of Kullu district. To begin with they were simple, without any designs. As new designs and patterns evolved in the shawls the designed pullas came into vogue.

Mr. Devi Prakash Sharma of Woolen Development Carding Center brought about variations in the patterns of pullas. Owing to the durability of acrylic yarn it is being used for the base.

Price of Pullas depend upon the design. Their price ranges from Rs. 35 to Rs. 60.
